The puck isn't where the power play happens. The power play happens in the seam nobody is watching — in the choice a defender has to make, in the read a quarterback makes before anyone else in the building sees it, in the gap a team attacks before the penalty kill even has time to set up.
In this video a certified Hockey Canada High Performance coach breaks down exactly how the NHL power play works — from the faceoff to the breakout to the three systems to the quarterback who makes it all go.
Chapter 1 — Why the best power plays try to score before they even set up. Win the draw and go. Lose the draw, break out fast and attack the gap in the first seven seconds before the goalie has his eyes and the penalty kill has its structure.
Chapter 2 — The three systems. The 2-3 Spread. The 1-3-1. The Umbrella. What each one is trying to force and why the best power plays shift between all three in the same two minutes. Plus the 5-on-3 — when the structure changes completely and the math breaks down in your favor.
Chapter 3 — The quarterback. The most important player nobody is watching. Shayne Gostibehere — acquired by Carolina for a third round pick — quarterbacked the best power play in the Stanley Cup Final. Three choices every time he touched the puck at the top. Shoot.
