Raw Charge
Summary
Less than 24 hours since being serenaded with “Kuuuuuuch” by a home crowd celebrating his ascension to the top of the Tampa Bay Lightning’s all-time points leaderboard, it appears that Nikita Kucherov’s days in Tampa might be numbered. While most Lightning fans were enjoying a night off from watching hockey, Sportnet’s Elliotte Friedman is reporting that the future hall of famer has informed general manager Julien BriseBois that he is requesting a trade . Playing in the final season of an eight-year contract with a cap hit of $9.5 million the reigning Hart Trophy winner just became the most attractive name on the trade front if he seriously wants out of Tampa. Could it be a ploy by Kucherov and his agent, Dan Milstein, to prod along contract negotiations that have seemingly stalled? Possibly, but if it is, it’s a dangerous game to play as Mr. BriseBois is not known for wavering on what he feels is the best direction forward for the organization. Eligible to sign a new contract last July 1, there has been shockingly little news from either side in regard to the state of any negotiations. The Lightning general manager has stated on several occasions that his goal is to keep Kucherov in a Lightning uniform for his entire career, but he would also not be providing any information to the media during the season. For his part, the notoriously private Kucherov brushed off any mention of a new contract, content to focus on his on-ice play. Pierre LeBrun adds to Friedman’s reporting by stating that Milstein and Kucherov met with JBB prior to the Lightning heading to Nashville for their game on Saturday against the Predators. Kucherov then informed his teammates on the plane, which might make for one of the more uncomfortable flights to Nashville in recent memory. LeBrun has also noted that, unlike Dylan Larkin or Connor Hellebuyck, Kucherov intends to continue playing with Tampa Bay in the short term. Trading Nikita Kucherov would be a franchise-altering move for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Outside of Connor McDavid, their may not be a player more central to a team’s offense than Kucherov. Despite the fact that he is 33-years-old, an age where most dynamic players start feeling the effects of time, there seems to be no slowing down for the three-time Art Ross winner. Even with what might be considered a “slow” start for him (15 points in 12 games) he’s still on pace for more than 100 points this season, which would give him seven seasons of passing the century mark. No matter what kind of return Mr. BriseBois gets for Kucherov, there is simply no way he wins the trade. In any deal, the best player involved is going to be leaving the Lightning. That being said, Tampa Bay is in a position to bring in a nice haul if a deal does evolve. They have room to retain salary which would increase the assets coming back. They could also facilitate a sign-and-trade if needed. Kucherov does have a 10-team trade list, but it wouldn’t be surprising if his agent is willing to expand that in order to get the winger to a team that would be the right fit. In a season where top players and trade demands are outshining play on the ice, the Lightning had hoped to avoid it with their own star. After years of tinkering with the roster and trying to make moves to put the team in Stanley Cup contention, Julien BriseBois is faced with his biggest challenge ever. Yes, even bigger than re-signing Steven Stamkos. How he navigates the next couple of months will likely determine his future with the organization. Update: The Lightning have issued a statement: Statement released by Tampa Bay Lightning GM Julien BriseBois: “We are aware of the media reports regarding the future of Nikita Kucherov with the Lightning. We unequivocally have no intention of trading Nikita.'' — Pierre LeBrun (@PierreVLeBrun) October 31, 2026 Stay tuned for more as it develops.
