Ohio Sled Hockey gives people with physical limitations a path into hockey, from a first try on a sled through national-level play. The organization develops athletes with instruction, encouragement, evaluation, and competition. Players also get team camaraderie and friendships on and off the ice.
What is Ohio Sled Hockey?
The club’s stated mission is to let local players move from novice to national competition while improving health and fitness through therapeutic and competitive sport. Ohio Sled Hockey lists three programs: the Columbus Blades, the Columbus Blue Jackets adult team, and the Northwest Ohio Arctic Wolves.
Ohio has had youth sled hockey for nearly ten years. As those athletes aged out of youth play, the organization formed two adult teams, a north team and a south team, so they could keep playing.
Teams
Columbus Blades
The Blades are the youth program for boys and girls with a physical disability that limits standing ice hockey. Most players can propel a manual wheelchair and sit upright with little or no extra support. If a player cannot propel their own sled, a pusher bar and an able-bodied pusher (a skater with hockey knowledge) can be added. Lateral anti-tippers are used when balance or getting up from a fall is a problem. Staff work on stick grip, positioning, and seating.
The Blades Juniors are listed on the club site as Tier 3 national champions for 2024–2025.
Columbus Blue Jackets adult team
This is the adult team under Ohio Sled Hockey, formerly called Ohio United. The team is co-ed and is for athletes whose physical disability limits standing hockey. It competes in the Northeast Sled Hockey League. The club site says the team won the NESHL championship in 2018–19 and finished second in 2021–22. It has also played Canadian tournaments, including a Cruiser Cup intermediate B championship in Brampton.
A 2023 exhibition against Hockey Players in Business was played at Ice Works Ice Rink in Worthington, Ohio.
Northwest Ohio Arctic Wolves
The Arctic Wolves are Ohio Sled Hockey’s northwest Ohio team. A separate Hockey Addict stub already exists at Team Profile: NWO Artic Wolves. Contact for that group is listed as nwosledhockey@gmail.com.
