The Dr. Bernard R. and Edna M. Sears Adaptive Hockey Program at the Spaulding Adaptive Sports Centers grows adaptive hockey in the Boston metro area and Eastern Massachusetts for players of all ages and abilities. The program runs recreational sessions plus two competitive sled hockey teams: the adult Spaulding Boston Shamrocks and the youth Spaulding Sledgehogs.
What is the Sears Adaptive Hockey Program?
Spaulding built the Massachusetts Adaptive Hockey Initiative to offer the full range of adaptive hockey in Eastern Massachusetts, from a first time on the ice through competitive play. The Massachusetts Sled Hockey Initiative is a collaboration of Spaulding Adaptive Sports Centers, the Boston Shamrocks, Massachusetts Hockey, the Northeast Sled Hockey League, and the DCR Universal Access Program.
Coaching covers every level. Recreational players, competitive adults, and competitive youth each have their own programming.
Programs
Recreational programming
Community sessions run through the year for players of all levels. Weekly play is offered from September through March. Clinics and other sessions are held at rinks around Eastern Massachusetts. Practices use small groups, skills work, and small games, with age-appropriate instruction.
Spaulding Boston Shamrocks
The Shamrocks are the competitive adult team. Spaulding Adaptive Sports Centers and the Boston Shamrocks manage the team together. The Shamrocks play in the Northeast Sled Hockey League and in regional tournaments. Community players can try out and move up to regional and national competition.
Spaulding Sledgehogs
The Sledgehogs are the youth competitive team, and one of the first youth competitive sled hockey teams in the greater Boston metro area. Players get youth-only practice times and compete in regional and national clinics and tournaments. Spaulding lists the youth program for ages 5–17, with recreational and competitive options. Listed practices have been held at Allied Veterans Memorial Rink in Everett and are led by USA Hockey certified coaches.
